Strange Fiction is an ongoing series inspired by the female characters from film and literature. It is also inspired by imaginative and whimsical shoebox dioramas children make in elementary school to illustrate a scene for book reports.
The series is about the every woman trope: the character whom the audience follow and identify with in the creative work. Every woman is almost always white or is portrayed by a white actress. Can a person of color portray the every woman or does her race overshadow the concept of the creative work?
I photograph a miniature stage that I've decorated with dollhouse-sized furniture, wallpaper, and flooring. I then photograph the model and digitally composite her into the image. The process can take up to a couple of weeks to a couple of years from conception to execution.
Light and Shape Study
This still life series was created by using wooden geometric shapes lit by a small LED flashlight and photographed with the iPhone 5s. Images were post processed through the Snapseed app and published through Instagram. This project was created for 30 consecutive nights and I would have to come up with the lighting and composition on the spot regardless of physical fatigue or mental stresses from the day. These images are a selection from the series.
Macro photography series in which LED UV Black Flashlight with UV Reactive Paint are used to illuminate the interiors and exteriors of vegetables. Shot in total darkness with long exposure times.
Projected images of macro botanicals are used to colorize and illuminate the artichoke both inside and outside.
Images were created by using a full frame DSLR camera, a 100mm macro lens, and a motorized camera macro rail. Approximately 50 captures were taken from the foreground to the background of the subject, then fused together with a specialized focus stacking software. The end result is optimum focus and sharpness from the front to the back of the subject.
